Steve Howard
FLORA and POMONA We specialise in the furniture and effects of the Arts & Crafts Movement from its beginnings in circa 1840 up to 1940. Many movements in art & design begin with a reaction against a prevailing trend. By 1840 the tendency to decorate excessively that had begun with William the Fourth was taking hold and is now generally described as "Victorian". Much of the Victorian design was a degeneration of previous historical styles including that of the Medieval Gothic Period. Pugins work, however, was a tribute to the original Gothic design purity and he vehemently criticised any that was not. This criticism was carried forward by the writing of Ruskin and, later, William Morris who wrote against the shoddy workmanship & design of Industrialised mass commercialism. Morris believed in providing quality, craftsman-made design to the masses. The key concepts to these thinkers were those of Honesty of construction, Truth to materials, Beauty in design and Functionalism. Arts & Crafts therefore can be seen as a description of a philosophy rather than of a particular design style. It encompasses, among others, works as varied as those of the Glasgow and Cotswold Schools.
P22 announces the availability of its Morris Font set, for PC or MAC computers. There is a 15% discount for Morris Society members; please use this link and type WMS15 (all caps) in the "pricing category" portion of the order form: http://www.p22.com/products/morris.html. Longtime Morris Society member (and former administrator of Kelmscott Manor) Helen Webb has opened a small hotel, "The Beechwood, " in Devon in the southwest of England. The hotel was built in 1883 as a gentleman's residence. It became a hotel in 1952. During the spring of 2004, they refurbished the hotel, using Morris designs extensively throughout the house, both in curtains and rugs, as well as having tapestries and other drawings associated with Morris and the Pre-Raphaelites. The hotel is in the small town of Ilfracombe on the North Devon coast, and it backs onto the famous South West Coastal Path. Ilfracombe has a very pretty harbour and is an ideal base for exploring other areas of Devon. Helen Webb offers a special rate for members of the Society who book into the hotel.
